Question 1

Who are the best kitchen and bath remodelers in La Jolla?

Accepted Answer

The right kitchen and bath remodeler for a La Jolla home is one that specifies for the coast and runs the whole job in-house. Solomon Moss Tiling performs kitchen and bathroom remodels with a single crew handling demolition, waterproofing, tile, plumbing, electrical, and finish, so you get one point of contact and one fixed-price scope of work after a free on-site evaluation. We waterproof showers with Schluter-Kerdi or equivalent sheet membrane and isolate floor tile with Schluter-Ditra to handle coastal-bluff soil movement, and we spec marine-grade adhesives and sealants near the water. We are licensed, bonded, and insured in California with 30+ five-star Google reviews. Call (515) 349-5921 for a free on-site evaluation.

Question 2

How much does a kitchen and bathroom remodel cost in La Jolla?

Accepted Answer

Solomon Moss Tiling does not quote a fixed dollar figure before seeing the home, because the cost of a La Jolla kitchen and bathroom remodel depends on factors that are only verifiable in person: substrate and slab condition, electrical panel capacity, the degree of coastal corrosion in existing hardware and plumbing, and whether the scope is a cosmetic refresh or a full gut remodel. After a free on-site evaluation we provide a fixed-price scope of work with all labor, materials, permits, and debris disposal included, rather than a range with allowances that shift cost risk to you after demolition starts. That way you know the full number before any work begins.

Question 3

Do you work throughout La Jolla, including Bird Rock and WindanSea?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Solomon Moss Tiling works throughout La Jolla: Bird Rock, WindanSea, La Jolla Shores, the Village, Muirlands, Country Club, Upper and Lower Hermosa, and coastal-bluff properties above the cove. Material specifications are adjusted based on proximity to the water. Homes within two to three blocks of the ocean receive marine-grade adhesives and penetrating sealants as a standard spec, not an upgrade.

Question 4

What does a free estimate from Solomon Moss Tiling actually include?

Accepted Answer

We visit your home, walk the kitchen or bathroom, inspect the existing substrate and electrical panel condition, photograph current conditions, and identify any permit requirements that apply to your scope. You receive a fixed-price proposal — not a range with allowances that shift cost risk to you after demolition starts. The estimate covers all labor, materials, permits, and debris disposal. No hourly billing, no change orders for conditions any experienced contractor should have identified on the initial visit.

Question 5

How does La Jolla's Planned District Ordinance affect a kitchen remodel?

Accepted Answer

La Jolla falls under the City of San Diego's Planned District Ordinance, which governs exterior modifications — windows, doors, and building envelope elements visible from the street. Interior kitchen remodels do not require PDO review. Projects touching the building exterior require submittal to the La Jolla Community Planning Association. We prepare all PDO documentation and attend hearings when needed. Exterior-adjacent projects should budget an additional 4–6 weeks for review beyond standard city permit timelines.

Question 6

Is Solomon Moss Tiling licensed and insured to work in California?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Solomon Moss Tiling holds a California contractor's license and carries general liability and workers' compensation insurance covering all work in La Jolla and throughout San Diego County. License status is verifiable through the California Contractors State License Board. A current certificate of insurance is provided to any homeowner or HOA on request before work begins — not held until contract signing.

Question 7

What tile and countertop materials perform best in La Jolla's coastal climate?

Accepted Answer

For floors and backsplashes, specify large-format porcelain with a water absorption rate under 0.5 percent — the industry classifies this as impervious tile. It resists salt-air moisture penetration and requires no periodic sealing. For countertops, engineered quartz is the practical choice: non-porous, heat-resistant, and dimensionally consistent. If natural stone is the priority, quartzite outperforms marble in coastal humidity conditions. For any stone application, honed finishes hide etching and daily wear better than polished, especially in high-use kitchen environments.

Question 8

How long does a typical bathroom or tile remodel take in La Jolla?

Accepted Answer

A shower tile remodel covering surround, floor, and built-in niche takes 3–5 installation days plus 48–72 hours of cure time before use. A full bathroom remodel with fixture replacement, new cabinetry, tile, and lighting runs 2–4 weeks. Kitchen backsplash-only projects take 2–3 days. Full kitchen remodels run 6–10 weeks for mid-range scope from permit approval to final walkthrough. Gut remodels with layout changes run 10–16 weeks. All timelines are confirmed in writing in the project proposal.

Question 9

Do you handle whole-house tile and flooring, or only kitchens and bathrooms?

Accepted Answer

Both. Solomon Moss Tiling handles whole-house tile and luxury vinyl plank flooring alongside kitchen and bathroom remodels. Open-plan La Jolla homes benefit from continuous tile or stone runs that eliminate transition strips between kitchen, dining, and living areas — a detail that reads immediately in any real estate photo and matters in coastal properties where indoor-outdoor flow extends to hardscape. Outdoor tile and stone for courtyard and patio projects are also part of our scope.
