Proper substrate preparation is the single most important durability factor in any tile installation. We use Schluter-Ditra uncoupling membrane on most floor projects to neutralize the movement between tile and subfloor that causes cracking over time. Cement board, moisture barriers, and manufacturer-spec thinset coverage complete the system.
Wet-area tile requires more than adhesive — it requires a fully sealed system. We apply Schluter-Kerdi or equivalent sheet membrane waterproofing with sealed seams and slope-to-drain on every shower build. Laticrete and RedGard systems complement our waterproofing work where project conditions call for them.
Oversized tiles — 24×48 inches and larger — deliver the seamless, modern look popular in Rancho Bernardo and Carmel Valley homes. Our crews use laser levels, back-buttering technique, and lippage control spacers to keep large-format installations flat and the grout lines consistent.
San Diego's salt air, UV intensity, and temperature swings accelerate tile failure when installers cut corners. We select exterior-rated porcelain pavers with low absorption ratings, set them with modified thinset rated for outdoor exposure, slope all surfaces for drainage, and plan expansion joints every 8–12 feet to handle thermal movement.
Deteriorating grout is both an aesthetic and a structural problem — compromised grout lines let moisture reach the substrate and begin the failure cycle. We regrout, seal, and restore discolored or damaged grout lines as a standalone service, extending tile life without a full replacement.
