Tile Repair Kit Results Without the DIY Guesswork

Solomon Moss Tiling delivers professional tile repair and grout restoration across San Diego, where a hardware-store tile repair kit patches the surface but rarely fixes the underlying problem. We hold a 5-star rating across 31 verified reviews, and owner Solomon Moss oversees every job personally. Where DIY kits fail at waterproofing and adhesion, we use proper substrate prep, Schluter-Ditra uncoupling membrane on floors, and Schluter-Kerdi sheet membrane on shower builds, so repairs actually last.

If your shower grout is cracking, your floor tile sounds hollow underfoot, or a bathroom wall tile has fallen clean off, those are symptoms of a substrate issue the surface patch won't solve. We diagnose the cause before we touch anything. That's the difference between a repair that holds and one you're calling about again in six months.

Why DIY Grout Kits Fall Short

Honestly, most grout repair kits are designed for cosmetic touch-ups on sound, stable tile. They don't address why the grout failed. Grout cracks because tiles move. Tiles move because the substrate (cement board, mortar bed, or subfloor) wasn't prepped correctly or has developed structural flex over time. Applying a repair kit over a moving substrate means the same crack reappears within months. We see it constantly. The fix isn't more product from a tube; it's diagnosing the movement and stopping it at the source before any surface work begins.

Floor Tile Repair Done Right

Floor tile repair starts below the tile surface. On most floor tile repairs and new installations, we install Schluter-Ditra uncoupling membrane before setting tile. Ditra neutralizes lateral stress between the subfloor and tile layer, the primary cause of grout joint cracking and hollow tile across San Diego homes. Skip that step and the repair fails. We don't skip it. We work with porcelain, ceramic, natural stone (marble, travertine, slate), large-format tile, mosaics, and specialty patterns like herringbone and chevron. If your tile is discontinued, we can usually source a close visual match or design a transition that looks intentional.

Grout Shower Repair and Waterproofing

Grout shower repair is one of the highest-stakes jobs in tile work. Water that gets behind failing grout and into the wall cavity causes mold, rot, and structural damage to framing and drywall. When we handle shower grout repair or a full shower rebuild, we use Schluter-Kerdi or equivalent sheet membrane waterproofing with sealed seams and slope-to-drain built into the mortar bed. This isn't optional. It's the difference between a shower that lasts 20 years and one that fails in three. If another contractor isn't mentioning waterproofing membranes on a shower job, ask why. That's a conversation worth having before you sign anything.

Travertine, Marble, and Natural Stone Repairs

Natural stone demands a different approach than ceramic or porcelain. Travertine repairs require filler that matches the stone's inherent porosity and color variation, and standard grout won't do it. Marble repairs need diamond-polished edges on replacement pieces so the new tile reads as continuous with the field, not patched. Both materials are also sensitive to cleaning chemistry: the wrong pH strips the surface finish or etches the stone. We've worked with natural stone installations throughout San Diego long enough to know which products work and which ones damage what they're supposed to fix.

Tile and Grout Restoration vs. Full Replacement

Not every damaged tile needs full replacement. Grout cleaning and repair, which means removing failed grout with an oscillating tool, cleaning the joints thoroughly, and regrouting with a matched or improved color, can transform a dated shower or floor without disturbing a single tile. For larger areas, tile and grout restoration with cleaning and sealing as part of a complete scope extends grout life significantly. Note: grout sealing isn't a standalone service we offer on its own, but it's included where it belongs in a full restoration project. Surfaces we restore include bathroom floors, shower walls, kitchen backsplashes, and commercial tile areas.

Shower Pan Leak Repair

A leaking shower pan is a serious problem that gets worse every day it goes untreated. Water migrating through a failed shower pan soaks the subfloor, damages joists, and eventually shows up as a stain on the ceiling below, or worse, a soft spot underfoot. Shower pan leak repair typically requires a full tear-out of the existing pan, proper sloping of the new mortar bed, and installation of a bonded waterproofing membrane before any tile goes back. There's no patch fix for a failed shower pan. The repair has to be done from scratch to actually stop the leak.

What to Expect from a Repair Estimate

Every job starts with a free on-site evaluation. Solomon Moss reviews the tile and substrate condition in person, identifies whether the scope is cosmetic grout repair, partial tile replacement, or a full waterproofed rebuild, and delivers a fixed-price scope of work, with no hourly billing and no estimates that balloon later. Permits are pulled by us when required, and inspection costs are included in scope. We work Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Call 888-515-1145 and we'll typically get you on the schedule within a week.
